How do cable and satellite TV square up?

There are certain things that you will immediately notice these two forms of television service have in common – not least the availability of bundle packages.

Given that not all customers are in a location where they can take advantage of fibre-optic, a phone company will usually offer a bundle in partnership with a satellite TV company, which is responsible for delivering the TV component. Regardless, the bundling of television services with home phone and/or Internet service can give you some big monthly savings if you find the right deal.

Otherwise, there are a lot of differences between cable and satellite TV services, in such respects as price, plan variety, equipment, and technology.

What do you need to know about cable television services?

Cable TV works on the basis of a network of fibre optic and trunk cables, which transmit encrypted signals to your TV consisting of your favorite TV shows. This physical connection of cables is in stark contrast to the satellite and satellite dish that are used to deliver a satellite TV service.

One downside of opting for a cable TV company is that there may not be as much scope to customize the TV package you receive. This is again demonstrated by Cox TV, which only gives you a choice between their standard TV service and the expanded Contour TV plan. Satellite TV providers, by comparison, tend to give you four or more plans to pick from, with various channels and prices available.

The equipment and technology involved need to be carefully considered as well. Picking a cable TV service means you will require a receiver to be connected to an outlet in your home via a network of cables and wires. Unfortunately, you will probably have to pay monthly fees for such equipment – which often equates to around a $10 monthly charge for a cable box, plus additional charges for each additional receiver.

All of the above may not give the impression that cable television services are exactly the best form of such service out there. However, there are also certain distinct advantages of cable TV that you should bear in mind, such as the relative ease of installation and much greater durability than satellite TV in bad weather. The latter can be attributed to the fact that a physical connection of cables and wires is used.

Are satellite TV services a better bet overall, then?

Satellite TV companies provide their services in quite a different way to their cable counterparts. Satellite TV shows are broadcast as encrypted data from the satellite firm’s broadcast center to the satellite, which then transmits the data to the user’s satellite dish. This is followed by the dish transmitting the data to the receiver on the user’s TV set.

As mentioned above, the differences in technology between cable and satellite television services mean that prices can differ markedly between the two for an equivalent service. In the case of most plans, it’s the satellite option that is cheaper than the cable one.

This is not to suggest, however, that satellite TV services are always affordable. Indeed, the very fact that satellite TV providers tend to offer such a wealth of channels and features compared to cable companies may mean you end up paying a hefty amount for your service.

You might imagine, though, that the broader range of shows and options you can generally access through satellite TV providers relative to their cable rivals has certain advantages – and it’s true. If you move from New York to California but still want to enjoy Giants games, it may be that a satellite television provider is more likely to be able to make this possible for you than a cable one.

Then, there’s the technology to consider, which helps to make satellite television services accessible to a much wider range of people than cable services, given that only the latter relies on physical cable connections. It means that almost anyone with a satellite dish, in most parts of the U.S., can enjoy a satellite TV service, such as those living in remote areas where cable TV services may be particularly inaccessible.

On the less positive side, though, you may have to pay more for the initial installation of a satellite service than would have been the case with a cable plan. Satellite dishes can be expensive, so you might have to pay quite a bit extra if there isn’t one included in the package at no additional cost.

Oh, and satellite television services aren’t as weatherproof as cable services, either. That’s because your dish has to sit outside, and may, therefore, be knocked over or damaged by heavy wind, thereby preventing you from enjoying your favorite show.

Think carefully about your ultimate choice of TV service in light of your own specific requirements and circumstances, and remember that here at WalletWise, we are continually publishing new and updated articles to further assist you in your decision-making. Happy watching!
